Srinagar serves as the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir and the main gateway to Kashmir. While many travelers view the city merely as a transit point before heading to other outstations, Srinagar is a deeply historic destination that demands its own dedicated exploration. Bisected by the Jhelum River and wrapped around the expansive waters of Dal and Nigeen lakes, this ancient city has acted as a critical trading post along the historical silk routes for centuries. Choosing to spend dedicated, unhurried days here allows you to understand the unique water-based lifestyle of the lake communities, explore centuries-old wooden architecture, and stroll through classic terraced gardens designed by Mughal emperors. Srinagar is defined by its geography, bisected by the winding Jhelum River and anchored by the vast waters of Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. Historically, the city rose to prominence as a summer retreat for Mughal emperors, who utilized the natural spring water flowing from the Zabarwan hills to construct elaborate terraced step-gardens. Today, Srinagar is divided into two distinct zones: the historic Old City (Shehr-e-Khas) and the modern city. As the administrative and tourism hub of Kashmir, Srinagar is the absolute anchor of any valley itinerary.
Dal Lake & Nigeen Lake
The interconnected water bodies that define Srinagar's aquatic culture — floating gardens, water marketplaces, and wood-carved houseboats. Take a traditional Shikara ride. Approx. 2–3 hours (or overnight if staying on a houseboat).
Shalimar Bagh (The Abode of Love)
The largest of the Mughal gardens, built in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir, featuring four expansive terraces and a pink-and-black marble pavilion. Approx. 1–1.5 hours.
Nishat Bagh (The Garden of Pleasure)
A twelve-terraced step-garden built in 1633, with cascading water channels and stunning elevated views of Dal Lake against the Zabarwan mountains. Approx. 1–1.5 hours.
Jamia Masjid (Old City)
A historic mosque in Nowhatta, built in 1394, showcasing Indo-Saracenic wooden architecture with 378 deodar pine pillars. Approx. 1 hour.
Hazratbal Shrine
A white marble mosque on the western bank of Dal Lake, housing a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad. Approx. 1 hour.
Shankaracharya Temple
9th-century stone temple atop Shankaracharya Hill at 1,000 ft, with a 360° panoramic view of the city and lakes. Approx. 1.5 hours (about 240 steps).
Spring & Summer (Late March to August): 15°C to 30°C. The gardens are in full bloom and the weather is ideal for sightseeing.
Autumn (September to November): 5°C to 20°C. Chinar foliage turns brilliant orange and gold with excellent photography conditions.
Winter (December to February): -2°C to 8°C. Frosty mornings and occasional snowfall, requiring heavy winter clothing and reliable indoor heating.
By Air: Srinagar International Airport (SXR), 12 km from the city center, with daily direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Jammu, and Chandigarh.
By Rail: Jammu Tawi Railway Station (JAT), approx. 260 km away, is the nearest major station on the national rail network.
By Road: Connects to Jammu via the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH44), through the Chenani-Nashri and Banihal-Qazigund tunnels, approx. 6–7 hours.
Wazwan
A multi-course traditional feast — Rogan Josh, Rista, and Gushtaba.
Traditional Kehwa
Saffron-infused hot green tea brewed with cardamoms, cinnamon, and crushed almonds.
Nun Chai
A salted, pink-colored tea brewed with milk, traditionally enjoyed with local bakeries like Tsot or Bakarkhani.
Pashmina Shawls
Exquisite, hand-woven shawls made from fine cashmere wool.
Silk Carpets
Hand-knotted mulberry silk carpets featuring intricate floral and Persian designs.
Saffron & Dry Fruits
High-grade Kashmiri saffron, paper-shell walnuts, and dried apricots.
Papier-mâché
Hand-painted lacquerware boxes and decor items crafted from molded paper pulp.
Walnut Wood Carvings
Carved wooden bowls, jewelry boxes, and furniture from seasoned walnut wood.
Flying into Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is the safest, most comfortable, and highly recommended way to reach Kashmir. While traveling by road via the Jammu-Srinagar Highway (NH44) is possible, it involves a long, winding 6 to 7-hour drive that can be prone to seasonal landslide delays.
