Gulmarg is a high-altitude alpine basin in the Pir Panjal range of the western Himalayas. Known historically as a favorite summer retreat for royalty and colonial-era planners, this expansive meadow has transformed into India's premier winter sports destination. Spending dedicated nights here allows you to experience the silent pine forests after day-trippers depart, catch the golden sunrise over Mt. Apharwat, and beat the massive morning queues at the world-famous Gulmarg Gondola. Gulmarg's geography is a wide, bowl-shaped meadow surrounded by dense forests of silver fir and pine, with Mt. Apharwat rising directly behind. Historically known as Gauri Marg, renamed Gulmarg (Meadow of Flowers) in the 16th century. During the British era the town was developed as a hill station, resulting in historic wooden cottages, a stone church, and a golf course.
Gulmarg Gondola (Phase 1 & 2)
One of the highest operating cable cars in Asia — Phase 1 to Kongdori (8,530 ft), Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak (13,780 ft). Approx. 2–4 hours.
Apharwat Peak
A towering peak at 13,780 ft, heavily snow-covered year-round, with sweeping Trans-Himalayan views. Approx. 1–2 hours via Phase 2 Gondola.
Gulmarg Golf Course
An 18-hole green golf course at 8,690 ft, one of the highest in the world. Approx. 1 hour.
St. Mary's Church
A historic stone church built in 1902, with Victorian architecture and stained-glass windows. Approx. 45 minutes.
Baba Reshi Shrine
13th-century Sufi shrine in the forest slopes near Tangmarg, with traditional Kashmiri wood-and-brick architecture. Approx. 1 hour.
Maharani Temple (Rani Temple)
A red-roofed temple built in 1915, offering views of the entire meadow basin. Approx. 30–45 minutes.
Spring & Summer (April to September): 15°C to 25°C — the green season, with a vibrant golf course and blooming wildflowers.
Autumn (October to November): 5°C to 15°C — deep autumn colors and early frost.
Winter (December to March): -5°C to 8°C, often below freezing at night — deep snow, prime season for skiing and sledging.
By Air: Srinagar International Airport (SXR), 58 km away — hire a private SUV via the scenic Srinagar-Tangmarg road.
By Road: Approx. 1.5–2 hours from Srinagar. The final 12 km from Tangmarg climbs steeply; during heavy winter snowfall, standard vehicles are stopped at Tangmarg and travelers transfer to local 4WD vehicles with snow chains.
Harissa
A slow-cooked, spiced mutton paste served hot with local flatbreads (Kandur Tsot) during cold mornings.
Warm Kehwa
Hot saffron green tea with cardamoms, cinnamon, and sliced almonds, sipped overlooking the snowy meadow.
Traditional Bakery
Bakarkhani (puff-pastry flatbread) or Kulcha with a cup of hot tea.
Kashmiri Woolens
Hand-knit woolen caps, gloves, socks, and heavy sweaters.
Walnut Wood Walking Sticks
Hand-carved walking sticks made from seasoned walnut wood, useful on unpaved meadow paths.
Pashmina & Woolen Shawls
A small selection of hand-woven shawls at local cooperative stands.
2 hours to full-day/multi-day coursesSkiing in Gulmarg is a world-class winter experience. Known globally for its exceptionally dry, powdery snow and the massive vertical drop accessed via the Gulmarg Gondola, this Himalayan resort has earned its reputation as one of Asia's premier skiing destinations. From the gentle, tree-lined slopes near the meadow for beginners to the extreme, powder-filled bowls of Mt. Apharwat for advanced backcountry adventurers, skiing here is an immersive, high-altitude journey.
View
10 to 40 minutesA helicopter joyride offers a unique perspective on the sheer vertical scale of Gulmarg's alpine landscape. Rising high above the meadow basin, these scenic flights carry passengers past dense evergreen forests, over the sharp mountain ridges of Mt. Apharwat, and directly toward the high-altitude snowfields of the western Himalayas — from short scenic loops to exclusive landings on pristine mountain zones.
View
2 to 4 hoursThe Gulmarg Gondola is one of the highest-operating cable car systems in Asia, climbing from the alpine meadow of Gulmarg through pine forests and open snowfields to the high ridges of Mt. Apharwat. Built in two phases, it carries visitors from the resort base up to Kongdori and then further to the shoulder of Apharwat Peak, offering some of the most dramatic mountain views in the Pir Panjal range. Unlike a typical sightseeing ride, the Gondola is the gateway to Gulmarg's high-altitude terrain — the same cable car used by skiers and snowboarders to reach the world-class powder bowls of Phase 2, and by summer visitors to see snow patches even in the middle of the warm season.
ViewDuring the heavy winter freeze, the steep 12 km road from Tangmarg to Gulmarg becomes highly icy. For safety, standard commercial and private vehicles must park at Tangmarg, and travelers must transfer to local union 4WD vehicles equipped with specialized snow chains.

Ticket availability on-site is highly restricted, with no physical ticket counters operating for Phase 2, and daily online slots frequently sell out weeks in advance during peak periods.
