The Shikara is a traditional, hand-paddled wooden canopy boat that has defined the aquatic culture of Kashmir for centuries. Beyond serving as a vital means of daily transit for the communities living on Srinagar's lakes, these boats offer visitors an intimate, slow-paced perspective of Dal and Nigeen Lakes. Gliding silently through the narrow reed channels, past historic houseboats and floating vegetable gardens, is a foundational Kashmiri experience that connects you directly with the historic rhythm of lake life.
Your Shikara experience begins at one of the dedicated, numbered stone jetties (ghats) along Boulevard Road, sinking into low-lying cushioned seats as the boatman pushes off. The boat glides through open waters past historic houseboats, narrow water alleys lined with floating gardens, and — as the sun sets — the Zabarwan mountains turn deep violet and amber, reflecting on the mirror-like surface of the lake.
The Floating Vegetable Market
An authentic, un-staged early-morning market on the backwaters of Dal Lake where local farmers trade fresh produce from their boats.
The Legacy Houseboats
Intricately carved cedarwood houseboats moored along the banks, viewed close-up at water level.
Floating Gardens (Radh)
Artificial reed islands where local communities grow tomatoes, melons, and cucumbers directly on the water.
Char Chinar (Sonal Lank)
A historic square island built by Murad Baksh, marked by four Chinar trees, offering a perfect mid-lake photo stop.
Sunset Reflections
The mirror-like lake surface creates a double-image of the sunset-lit hills — one of Srinagar's best photography windows.
Morning: best for photographers and the active floating vegetable market, with cool air and glassy water.
Sunset (the classic window): golden-amber light and the most vibrant mountain reflections.
Summer (July–August): the floating gardens are active and lotus flowers are in full bloom.
Shikara fares are officially regulated by the J&K Tourism Department, fixed hourly per boat rather than per passenger.
Standard tariffs are displayed at major lakeside ghats — confirm the total price and route with the boatman before starting.
