What makes Hanle worth visiting — what will I see at the observatory?

The Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle hosts a 2.01-metre optical telescope — the highest optical telescope in the world at 4,522 m. The observatory is managed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and is open to visitors in the late afternoon. You can see the dome, talk to local staff, and understand why Hanle's altitude and near-zero light pollution makes it one of the best astronomical sites on earth. The real show, though, is after dark — the Milky Way is visible as a solid band with the naked eye, and even a phone camera on night mode captures more stars than most people have seen in their life.

What are the Protected Area Permits for Hanle and how do we get them?

Accepted Answer

Hanle is in a restricted border zone near the Line of Actual Control with China. Indian nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Deputy Commissioner's office in Leh — we process this for you, no extra cost. Share your Aadhaar card 10 days before departure. Foreign nationals currently cannot visit Hanle (as of 2026). We will confirm current rules for your travel date as they occasionally change.

Is the Tso Moriri lake different from Pangong?

Accepted Answer

Very different. Pangong is a tourist destination — campsites, 3G signal, boats for hire, hundreds of visitors daily. Tso Moriri is a protected wetland — there is one village (Korzok), a handful of camps, no shops, and almost no traffic. The wildlife is the draw: bar-headed geese that migrate over the Himalayas, kiangs grazing on the far lakeshore, and in some seasons a small group of flamingos in the southern shallows. The silence is complete.

How remote is the Hanle road — what if something goes wrong?

Accepted Answer

The Hanle road is a military-maintained track — not a sealed highway. Mobile signal is absent for most of the 80 km from Tso Moriri to Hanle and 280 km from Hanle back to Leh. We carry a satellite phone and a comprehensive first aid kit on this tour. The Indian Army has posts along the route. In 5 years of running Hanle tours, we have never had an emergency that required evacuation. However, travel insurance with emergency evacuation cover is mandatory on this tour — we will not confirm the booking without it.

What is the total driving distance on the 8-day Ultimate Ladakh tour?

Accepted Answer

Approximately 1,100 km of driving over 8 days — 2 rest/local days and 6 driving days, averaging 180 km per driving day. The longest single day is the Hanle–Leh return (280 km, 8–9 hours). We start early on that day to arrive Leh before dark.
