Overview

Most Ladakh tours stop at Pangong. The Ultimate Ladakh continues south to Tso Moriri — a Ramsar-listed high-altitude wetland at 4,522 m where bar-headed geese nest, Tibetan foxes hunt kiangs (wild asses) on the lakeshore, and occasional flamingos wade in the shallows. And then east to Hanle — a remote village near the China border that hosts the Indian Astronomical Observatory, the highest optical telescope in the world. The dark sky here is the least light-polluted in Asia. This 8-day tour requires Protected Area Permits (PAP) for Hanle and parts of the Tso Moriri circuit — we arrange them all. The drive from Pangong to Tso Moriri via Chushul (200 km) and from Tso Moriri to Hanle (80 km) are two of the most remote drives in India. You will not see a petrol pump, shop or phone signal for long stretches. This is the Ladakh that exists beyond the tourist trail. [TEAM NOTE: Add what you think about Hanle specifically — the telescope, the village, the night sky. If your team has a favourite stargazing memory from Hanle, that story is worth more than any specification of the observatory's aperture. People booking this tour want to feel the remoteness before they leave home.]
