Leh is the historic capital of Ladakh, in the high-altitude cold desert of the Trans-Himalayas, wrapped around the Indus River basin. This ancient trading hub has served as a meeting point for Central Asian merchants, Buddhist pilgrims, and mountain travelers for centuries. Leh's geography is defined by its position in the rain-shadow of the Great Himalayas. The city rose to prominence in the 17th century under the Namgyal dynasty, who built the towering Leh Palace. As the administrative and tourism hub of Ladakh, Leh is the essential base from which travelers acclimatize before heading to Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, or Tso Moriri.
